#BlackGirlMagic Alert! Issa Rae Comedy ‘Insecure’ Heads to HBO

Awkward Black Girl Magic Alert!!! Writer and popular YouTuber Issa Rae is making headway in the world of TV. The creator of the web series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl can now add another notch to her belt: her new comedy series Insecure has been picked up by HBO. A celebratory #BlackGirlMagic moment for us all and Awkward Black Girl fans everywhere, after launching a successful pilot starring herself, Jay Willis of The Game and Basketball Wives‘ Yvonne Orji, directed by music video visionary Melina Matsoukas (notable for her work with Beyoncé and Solange) and co-created by Larry Wilmore of The Nightly Show, HBO has ordered to series this sure-to-be dazzling new work.

Rae, a black woman author and creative unapologetic in her craft, has turned down many of the network’s suggestions to alter or change the series’ narrative into something not aligning with her original vision. The 30-minute comedy is set to feature familiar themes of ABG, following the “friendship of two modern-day black women, Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), and all of their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations.”

Having garnered more than 2 YouTube million views, 200,000 subscribers and a Shorty Award, Issa Rae has been featured in Rolling Stone, Glamour, been amongst Forbes‘ “30 Under 30” and has covered the May 2015 issue of Essence Magazine alongside game changers Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Debbie Allen, and Mara Brock-Akil. We at FTS cannot wait to tune in and see what’s next from this amazing talent. Bravo Issa Rae, bravo!
